When to Use Lifting Equipment and Why It Matters

Lifting equipment like belts and straps can be incredibly useful, but only when used with purpose. I personally use a mix, depending on what phase of training I’m in.

General Prep Phase:
In this phase, I’m lifting heavy, so I use straps and a lifting belt to help move more weight safely. The belt supports my lower back and trunk, reducing injury risk while allowing me to push harder.
Conditioning Phase:
Here, I drop the equipment. The goal is to recruit as many muscles as possible, especially through the core. A belt provides stability, but I want to train my body to create that stability on its own.

Competition Phase:
No equipment here either. I want my gym work to reflect my sport-specific movements, and my sport doesn’t use belts or straps. It’s all about transferring the strength I’ve built in the gym over to my sport performance.
Bottom line: Equipment is a tool, not a shortcut. Use it when it makes sense—but don’t let it become a crutch. Train with purpose, and you’ll get stronger where it matters.
